The chalk downland on Bindon Hill is an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and is valued for its wild flowers, insects and in particular its butterflies. Once widespread, chalk downlands are now scarce, due largely to modern farming techniques. The Wild flowers and Butterflies found on Bindon Hill during the summer months are magical.

The Butterfly Conservation Centre is based at Manor Yard in East Lulworth. Butterfly walks can be booked at the Heritage Centre in Lulworth Cove. See also, UK Butterflies
