Lulworth Castle

Lulworth Castle is set in extensive parkland in East Lulworth, Dorset. It was built as a lavish hunting lodge by the 3rd Viscount Howard, Thomas Howard in 1608.

Main Hall

Destroyed by fire on the 29th August 1929, restoration work returned the exterior to its original glory, consolidated the interior, and revealed many stories about its past.

Main Hall

The Main Hall at Lulworth Castle was previously an elegant drawing room with Persian Carpets, oil paintings and an ornate ceiling.

Upper floor

The floors and ceilings were completely destroyed. Doorways and fire places from the upper floors can still be seen, high up on the walls of the Main Hall.

Main Hall

English Heritage completed the restoration of Lulworth Castle in 1995.

Courtyard

The Castle and Courtyard are a popular venue for weddings, corporate events and private parties.

Below Stairs

Explore the fascinating history through various informative displays, exhibitions and the reconstructed kitchen and cellars.

Kitchens

Visit the children’s activity room or climb the Castle Tower and take in the unrivalled views across the Purbecks.

Tower View

Enjoy the tranquillity of the nearby 18th century Chapel, bring a picnic, let off steam in the Adventure Playground and wander through the park and woodland (dogs welcome in the park on leads).

Pay and display parking allows visitors access to the park and grounds, with a separate admission charge for the Castle and Chapel.

Not far from the Castle gates, the Weld Arms offers a fine selection of ales and hearty, wholesome food. Nearby in the beautifully restored old Catholic School Building, Past and Presents has a wonderful selection of unique gifts and an Internet Café serving refreshments and delicious Dorset cream teas.
